Curriculum / Teaching Methods
The school aims to achieve a broad, balanced curriculum
which includes the National Curriculum Core Subjects - English,
Mathematics, Science and Welsh. The National Curriculum Foundation
Subjects of History, Geography, Technology, Physical Education,
Art, Music, Information Communication Technology and Personal, Health
and Social Education are also taught along with Religious Education.
Children reaching the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) will be assessed
according to government regulations. The individual children's achievements
are reported to their parents / guardians. A summary of the overall
results are included in the Annual Governors Report to Parents and
the School Prospectus. Note these are always 12 months in arrears.
An on entry assessment
takes place on entry into Nursery.
A statutory Baseline
Assessment takes place on each child within 7 weeks of them commencing
Reception.
This school looks beyond
the core and foundation subjects of the National Curriculum, as
these are not intended to be the whole curriculum a school offers.
The whole curriculum
of a school goes far beyond the formal timetable. It includes a
range of policies and practice to promote the personal and social
development of pupils to accommodate different teaching and learning
styles, to develop positive attitudes and values and to forge an
effective partnership with parents and the local community.
Our Policy Documents
and Schemes of Work, which are agreed by the governing body, are
available for parents to read on request.
The Nursery/Reception
(Early Years) curriculum is based on the Foundation Phase.
There are seven areas
of learning:
- Personal and Social Development,
Well Being and Cultural Diversity.
- Language, Literacy and Communication
Skills.
- Mathematical Development.
- Welsh Language Development
- Knowledge and Understanding of
the World.
- Physical Development.
- Creative Development
We are currently extending
the 'Foundation Phase' philosophy and practice into Years 1 and
2. We are focussing on developing the Key Skills of Literacy, Numeracy,
Bilingualism and I.C.T. Through a topic based approach also covering
the National Curriculum requirements.
